Plasmalogens play a critical role in cell membranes— providing unique structural attributes, facilitating signaling processes and protecting membrane lipids from oxidation.  It has been reported that reduced levels of plasmalogens is correlated with cognition deficit, oxidative stress, and severity of disease.  Since brain contains the highest amounts of tissue plasmalogens, decreased levels of Plasmalogens in the brain can be demonstrated in various neurodegenerative disorders. These include Alzheimer’s diseases (AD), Parkinson’s disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, cancer, and depression.
