When should parents take their child to see a doctor for an eye exam?

When should children have eye health check-ups?

Diseases and abnormalities of children’s eyes and visions can be detected from newborns to adolescence. Occasionally, abnormalities do not have noticeable symptoms and screening tests will help discover and treat their diseases at an early stage.

1. If children show no symptoms, parents should bring them to have an eye health check-up since they are 1-1.6 year old every 1-2 years until age 13.
2. Parents should prompt eye health check-up when children have following symptoms: 

They are 3-4 months old and cannot stare at their mother’s faces.

Nystagmus or eyes with repetitive, uncontrollable movements

Crossed eyes (Strabismus) or problems with moving eyes

Drooping eyelids, watery eyes, sticky eyes

White pupil

Family history of eye disorders: congenital cataract, glaucoma, macular degeneration, eye tumor or eye cancer
