From Thailand to the United States and Cambodia
Dr. Rapeepat’s journey into medicine was inspired by his grandfather, a distinguished physician and the first director of a hospital in Phetchabun, Thailand. Growing up in his grandfather’s clinic in Sukhothai, Dr. Rapeepat developed a deep affinity for the medical profession. Encouraged by his mother, a career guidance teacher, he pursued his studies at Triam Udom Suksa School in Bangkok, following in the footsteps of both his grandfather and mother.
Initially interested in architecture due to his passion for drawing, Dr. Rapeepat soon realised his true calling lay in medicine. During his time at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine, he remained involved in artistic activities, contributing to various creative projects within the faculty.
After completing his medical training, Dr. Rapeepat served a three-year tenure at a hospital in Lopburi, Thailand. This experience exposed him to a wide range of medical cases, including accidents involving monkeys and unexploded ordnance, which deepened his interest in internal medicine. Determined to pursue further training abroad, he funded his studies independently, without relying on family support.
Dr. Rapeepat advanced his expertise in nephrology and kidney transplantation at the Albert Einstein Medical Centre in Philadelphia, USA. He spent a total of eight years in the United States, where he honed his medical skills and improved his English proficiency.
A Unique Experience in Cambodia
Following a delay in renewing his work permit, Dr. Rapeepat sought new opportunities and accepted a position as a nephrology specialist at a hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Embracing the cultural differences, he learned basic Khmer to communicate with his patients, many of whom were delighted to be addressed in their native language. His six-year tenure in Cambodia reinforced his desire to return to Thailand, where he could provide more effective care to his patients.
Joining BNH Hospital
Upon returning to Thailand, Dr. Rapeepat was introduced to Dr. Nopparat, who was about to assume the role of director at BNH Hospital. Their immediate rapport led to an impromptu interview, resulting in Dr. Rapeepat joining the hospital’s nephrology department. Shortly before commencing his new role, he suffered a bone fracture, necessitating a six-month recovery period. The hospital’s understanding and support during this time left a lasting impression on him.
Now in his second year at BNH Hospital, Dr. Rapeepat continues to find fulfilment in his work and enjoys the camaraderie of his colleagues. He appreciates the hospital’s focus on work-life balance and the familial atmosphere among the staff.
The Art of Nephrology
Nephrology is a field where early-stage kidney dysfunction often presents subtle signs, making it challenging to diagnose. Dr. Rapeepat’s training under a professor renowned for interpreting electrolyte imbalances through laboratory results—without initial patient interviews—greatly influenced his approach to the specialty. This method allows for precise diagnoses based solely on numerical data, a skill he has refined over the years.
He recalls a case involving an elderly patient who exhibited sudden personality changes and aggression. Laboratory tests revealed low sodium levels due to heart failure, leading to cerebral oedema. Addressing the electrolyte imbalance resolved the behavioural issues, highlighting the profound impact kidney health can have on overall wellbeing.
Dr. Rapeepat dedicates considerable time to educating his patients, especially those new to nephrology. He often spends one to two hours discussing kidney function, dietary considerations, and lifestyle adjustments. To aid understanding, he provides illustrated guides, ensuring patients are well-informed and engaged in their treatment plans.
Philosophy and Personal Interests
An avid reader with a particular interest in philosophy, Dr. Rapeepat finds inspiration in Stoicism. He applies its principles to his practice, focusing on aspects within his control and fostering a balanced perspective on life.
In his leisure time, Dr. Rapeepat is passionate about film photography. He enjoys capturing images during his travels, developing and printing his own photographs. This hobby not only provides a creative outlet but also serves as a meditative practice that complements his medical career.
