Dr. Vorawan Luangjarmekorn: A Cardiologist Whose Many Life Roles Have Shaped Her Heart and Healing

Her laughter energises her body, while the improved quality of life of her patients fuels her heart.

Dr. Vorawan Luangjarmekorn

To those who know her, the first thing that comes to mind is her bright smile and infectious laugh. Dr. Vorawan Luangjarmekorn (Charoenattasil), affectionately known as “Dr. Top,” is a cardiologist at the Heart, Kidney & Metabolism Centre at BNH Hospital. Behind her cheerful nature lies a life filled with dedication, juggling the roles of physician, mother, and daughter caring for elderly parents.

A Shy Child with Mechanical Dreams

Dr. Vorawan grew up as the youngest in a Chinese-Thai family where the expectation was clear: she would become a doctor. When asked what she wanted to be, the answer was always “a doctor” – though, deep down, she had a passion for machines and engineering.

“As a child, I loved dismantling and reassembling things at home.”

In upper secondary school, she was placed in the science-engineering stream at Triam Udom Suksa School, surrounded by classmates aiming to become engineers. She excelled in physics and chemistry, even qualifying for the national Chemistry Olympiad camp.

But everything changed in her final year of school when she joined a hospital camp at Siriraj Hospital.

“There were so many patients. Seeing doctors and nurses in action and how their care helped people feel better moved me. It rekindled my childhood dream of becoming a doctor. That’s when I made it my first university entrance choice.”

Becoming a Medical Student – and Breaking Out of Her Shell

Dr. Vorawan was accepted into the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University. From a quiet, academically inclined girl, she took on new experiences: she became a cheerleader, joined rural community camps, and took part in various faculty activities.

“I knew I was shy, but I wanted to change. I wanted to challenge myself. So whenever there was an opportunity, I tried something new. I’m still shy today, but I’m proud that I pushed myself.”

Even after choosing medicine, her love of mechanics remained. That’s why, after specialising in internal medicine, she pursued cardiology because the heart involves intricate systems and relies heavily on physics, a subject she’s always loved.

Listening from the Heart

“The most heartwarming cases are sometimes the simplest, not complex diseases, but moments where your advice genuinely improves someone’s life.”

One memorable patient came in for high cholesterol, but through a thoughtful conversation, Dr. Vorawan learned the real issue lay in his lifestyle. Overwhelmed by work and lacking rest or exercise, his health suffered. Eventually, he chose to leave his job, start a business, and regain control of his life, and his health flourished.

“We’ve followed up for over five years now. Every appointment feels like catching up with an old friend.”

Dr. Vorawan is known for being a good listener. Many patients find it hard to articulate their symptoms, but she gives them time, listening patiently, asking about their lifestyle, and gently guiding them toward solutions.

“Being a doctor means understanding your patients, not forcing them to do what they can’t. If someone can’t quit smoking, I encourage reduction, or joining a cessation programme. If it doesn’t work, we start annual lung cancer screenings and catch it early, if we can.”

She adds, “My parents had chronic illnesses. My father has since passed, and I cared for both of them, managing medication, attending appointments. So I understand what patients and their families feel.”

Treating Beyond the Heart

At BNH Hospital, where she has worked for over eight years, Dr. Vorawan practises the Complete Care model of integrated, holistic medicine that extends beyond heart conditions. From vaccine updates to broader health screenings, she works closely with other specialists to ensure well-rounded care.

Thanks to the hospital’s close-knit environment, referrals happen seamlessly and no bureaucracy is needed. Patients open up to her like family, sometimes sharing emotional or family struggles that affect their physical health. She never overlooks these aspects, believing true care must include both body and mind.

From Mother to Mentor

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Many of Dr. Vorawan’s long-term patients are parents—and they relate easily to her, because she too is a mother.

“I wanted to do the best for my child. I chose natural delivery, even though it was painful, because of its benefits for the baby’s immunity. I also committed to exclusive breastfeeding for six months. It was exhausting juggling expressing milk and seeing patients, but I gave it my all.”

She gave birth during the first COVID-19 lockdown, continuing work until the final day.

“I was on duty Friday. That night I went into labour, and delivered Saturday morning. No visitors were allowed due to the lockdown.”

She delivered at BNH and was both a doctor and patient. When her milk didn’t come immediately and she experienced postnatal complications, the nurses’ emotional support stood out.

“They were by my side, not just for clinical duties but also for emotional strength. When I was readmitted, my baby was just a week old. With COVID so rampant, I couldn’t hire a nanny. The nurses at the counter helped look after my newborn. I’ll never forget it.”

With guidance from paediatricians and nurses, she succeeded in her goal – six full months of exclusive breastfeeding.

“I was on maternity leave during lockdown, confined to a condo room, pumping milk every three hours, barely sleeping. But my husband supported me, taking me on short walks, caring for the baby. I read, I calmed my mind, and eventually, our child grew healthy and strong. I’m glad I gave it my all.”

A Doctor Who Leads by Example

“As a cardiologist, I ask patients to run on treadmills. Naturally, they ask what I do for fitness. I can’t afford to gain weight or develop hypertension or diabetes. I must be a role model.”

Dr. Vorawan began exercising seriously during her cardiology fellowship at Chulalongkorn Hospital, inspired by her athletic husband, a doctor who runs marathons and competes in triathlons.

She started with 10k runs, eventually completing a half marathon.

“The first 10 km was discouraging. I kept thinking, ‘Still not halfway?’ I was exhausted. My husband ran with me and asked, ‘Shall we stop and ride the pickup?’ They had a car for runners who couldn’t finish. But I told myself, ‘You won’t die. Just keep going.’ And I made it to the finish line.”

Her running stories help her connect with patients. When someone talks about marathon training, she knows what they’re facing and can offer practical advice.

Growing Old Together with Her Patients

Most patients with cardiovascular disease return regularly for check-ups – sometimes for years. Dr. Vorawan values these long-term relationships.

“I want to be a source of luck in their lives. I want to grow old with them – 5, 10 years with no major complications. I want them to see me as a sister, daughter, or niece.”

From a childhood dream shaped by family expectations to becoming a trusted figure in the lives of her patients, Dr. Vorawan remains dedicated to preserving their health and happiness, just as she would for her own family.
