Gastroscopy & Colonoscopy
Both types of endoscopy are highly accurate examinations of gastrointestinal disorders.
Gastrointestinal endoscopy
- is used to look for abnormalities in the esophagus and stomach, such as ulcers in the esophagus and stomach, H. pylori bacterial infection,esophagitis, or bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.
Colonoscopy
- can detect the causes of abnormalities in the colon, such as abnormal excretion, constipation, chronic diarrhea, and bloody stools, and is also an accurate screening test for colon cancer.

Gastrointestinal cancers occur in the general population and are often asymptomatic in the early stages, only showing symptoms or detected in a more advanced stage.

Advantages of a colonoscopy
Currently, the data show that a colonoscopy can reduce the chances of developing colon cancer by up to 69% and reduce the chances of dying from colon cancer by up to 88% (Harvard Health Publishing, Oct 18, 2022).
The entire colon and ileum can be examined without surgery, which can help prevent disease early, even if there are little or no symptoms. If an abnormality is detected, such as a polyp or tumour, a biopsy can be performed and the tissue examined straight away. Or if bleeding is found in the intestines, it can be stopped immediately as well.

Is screening necessary if there are no symptoms or no risk factors?
Patients without suggestive symptoms should also undergo screening; they are divided into 2 groups:
- Those without a family history of cancer. At present, it is recommended to undergo an examination at the age of 50 years and over.
- Those with a family history or close relatives with cancer. If there are family members or 2 or more direct relatives with cancer, start endoscopic screening at the age of 40 and over, including the most common hereditary cancer groups such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, or colon cancer. If someone in your family has any of the aforementioned cancers, you should be vigilant, as it may increase your risk of developing colon cancer.
