Because Breast MRI produces highly detailed images, interpretation requires the expertise of a specialist Breast Radiologist. Accurate image analysis helps identify suspicious lesions, reduce the risk of missed cancers, and minimise unnecessary biopsies.

Traditionally, breast cancer surgery often involved removing the entire breast (mastectomy). Today, many women may be suitable for Breast Conserving Surgery, which removes the tumour together with a small margin of surrounding healthy tissue while preserving as much of the breast as possible.
When clinically appropriate, this approach helps maintain the breast’s natural appearance while providing effective cancer treatment. Suitability is determined by factors such as the size, location, and stage of the tumour, as well as each patient’s individual circumstances. Breast Conserving Surgery is usually followed by radiotherapy to reduce the risk of the cancer returning.
As the breasts are located close to the heart and lungs, conventional X-ray radiotherapy may expose these nearby organs to a small amount of radiation, particularly during treatment for left-sided breast cancer. Over time, this may increase the risk of certain long-term treatment-related complications in some patients.
Proton Beam Therapy uses proton particles instead of conventional X-rays. Unlike traditional radiotherapy, proton beams can be precisely controlled to deliver most of their energy directly to the tumour, helping to reduce radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissues and nearby organs.
Because Proton Beam Therapy requires highly specialised equipment and expertise, it is currently available at only a limited number of centres in Thailand. Through its collaborative clinical network, BNH Breast Health Centre can facilitate access to Proton Beam Therapy for eligible patients who may benefit from this advanced treatment.
