Children of different ages develop at different rates. You can compare your child’s abilities with this article to help you make corrections if your child is slower than his/her age.
What should children of different ages do?
At 1 month, the child should be able to look at objects for a short time, within 8-12 inches, listen to sounds, and keep their hands clenched at all times.
At 2 months old, staring at his own hands, making sounds in his throat, cooing, and smiling in response.
At 3 months, the head is elevated at 45-90 degrees when lying face down, laughing, and staring at objects moving across the body.
At 4 months old, he can turn over, sit with his head steady, can hold a rattle, laugh loudly, and turn towards sounds.
At 5 months old, can turn over on its own, grab objects, put objects in its mouth, and imitate speech sounds.
At 6 months old, he can sit up without falling over. He is determined to play with toys and can make 1 consonant sound.
At 7 months old, can crawl, change hands, remember their own name and turn when called, begin to understand the word “don’t”.
At 8 months old, he can stand and pronounce many consonant sounds continuously, similar to speaking. He likes to play peek-a-boo.
At 9 months old, can stand up with arms, uses thumb and other fingers to pick up small objects, points to indicate needs, is interested in strangers.
At 10 months old, he can stand on his own for about 2 seconds. He likes to play by clapping his hands and understands simple words such as “bye-bye” and “kissing”.
At 12 months, the child can stand firmly on his own, pick up a block of wood and put it in a container, call his/her father/mother, and understand simple gestures such as passing things when asked.
At 15 months, they can walk, draw messy lines on their own, speak 2-6 words, understand simple commands, share their interests, such as showing off toys or showing them things, and learn to eat by themselves but will be messy.
At 18 months, the child can climb stairs with the help of an adult, hold hands, and use a pencil to imitate drawing straight lines. He can speak 4-10 words and shows his love by kissing his parents on the cheek.
At 2 years old, he jumps up in the air with his feet off the ground, uses spoons and glasses fluently, speaks in phrases, likes to ask questions like “What is this?”
At 3 years old, can ride a tricycle, draw circles following the example, knows his/her name, age, and gender, can tell stories in a way that people can understand 50% of the time.
At 4 years old, he walks on tiptoe, can hold a pencil and write with considerable skill, draws crosses and squares following examples, can tell stories in a way that people can understand almost all of them, and likes to play with friends.
Age 5 years, can run and jump, wash hands, wipe hands and brush teeth by himself without help, draw triangles according to the example, can tell stories, understands the rules of the game.
At 6 years old, can ride a 2-wheeled bicycle, skate, tie shoelaces, draw a person with at least 6 body parts, can distinguish right and left, can count to 100.
Age 8-10 years: Know the time, have a sense of humor, are responsible for taking care of themselves, their belongings and their own room, and are responsible for housework.
Age 12-15 years: Have confidence and pride in their own abilities. Interact closely with friends, especially those of the same gender. Feel comfortable talking to or asking their parents questions.
Note: These developmental milestones are typical for a normal child. Your child may be slightly earlier or later than this, which is still considered normal. However, if it is very slow, you should consult a pediatrician.
