Why Mammogrammes and Breast Ultrasounds?
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women, accounting for 37.9% of all female cancers. Current guidelines recommend breast cancer screening (mammogramme and ultrasound) for women:
- Aged 40 and over
- With a family history of breast, uterine, or ovarian cancer (recommended to start screening at age 35)
- Who have felt a lump in their abdomen or breast, experienced breast pain, or noticed any unusual discharge from the nipple
- Screening should be done annually
Risk Factors for Breast Cancer
Here are some of the factors that can increase your risk of developing breast cancer:
- Age: Women over 50 are at a higher risk.
- Personal History of Breast Cancer: Individuals who have had breast cancer in one breast are at a 3-4 times higher risk of developing it in the other.
- Personal History of Ovarian Cancer: Due to the hormonal connection, women with ovarian cancer have an increased risk of breast cancer.
- Family History of Breast Cancer: Having a family member with breast cancer increases your risk.
- Exposure to Estrogen: Prolonged exposure to Estrogen, a female sex hormone, is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer.
- Lifestyle Factors: Obesity, lack of exercise, alcohol consumption, and exposure to high levels of radiation can increase the risk.
- Reproductive History: Women who have never had children or had their first child after age 30 are at a higher risk.
- Menstrual History: Women who started menstruating at a young age or went through menopause later in life have an increased risk.
Initial Breast Cancer Screening
Mammography
A mammogramme is an X-ray of the breast. The breast is placed on a flat surface and compressed to obtain the image. Some women may experience discomfort during this procedure due to the compression. This test can detect very small tumours that cannot be felt, making regular mammograms crucial, even if self-exams or clinical exams find nothing unusual. All women should begin annual mammogrammes at age 40.
Clinical Breast Examination
A clinical breast examination is a physical examination performed by a healthcare provider to check for any lumps or abnormalities in the breast and underarm area. Women aged 20 and over should have a clinical breast exam every 2-3 years. Women aged 40 and over should have one every year.
Breast Self-Examination
A breast self-examination (BSE) is a monthly check that you perform on yourself to become familiar with your breasts and to detect any changes. It’s best to do this a few days after your menstrual period ends, when your breasts are less tender. By regularly examining your breasts, you can become aware of what is normal for your body and may be able to detect any changes or abnormalities early.
What to look for:
- Lumps: These can be hard or soft, with smooth or rough edges.
- Swelling: Notice any areas that feel swollen or thicker.
- Pain: Any new or persistent pain in your breast or armpit.
- Nipple changes: Look for any discharge, inversion, or scaling.
- Dimpling: Check for any puckering or dimpling of the skin.
- Redness or rash: Pay attention to any redness or rash on your breast or nipple.

BDMS Breast Cancer Screening Package
Breast cancer screening with a mammogram and ultrasound significantly enhances the effectiveness of early breast cancer detection. This dual approach can identify tiny calcifications or lesions and determine whether a lump in the breast is fluid-filled or solid tissue. This helps in the initial differentiation of abnormal masses. The examination takes only about 30 minutes, and you do not need to fast or restrict fluids beforehand.

Preparation
- The ideal time for a mammogramme is typically 7-14 days after your period has ended.
- For a mammogramme, do not apply lotion, talcum powder, or deodorants/antiperspirants (including sprays) to your chest or underarm areas. These products can contain substances that may appear as abnormal calcifications on a mammogramme, leading to misdiagnosis.
- If you are pregnant or suspect you might be pregnant, please inform the staff beforehand. Mammogrammes should generally be avoided during pregnancy; only an ultrasound will be performed in such cases
